The Hills of Hobbiton

“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.”

Auf meiner Reise durch Neuseeland, konnte ich oft nicht wirklich realisieren, dass all das Wirklichkeit ist. Die Natur in diesem Land verzaubert einen und man verliert sich in ihrer Schönheit. All die hohen Berge, klaren Seen und grünen Hügel und Wiesen, all das kommt einem vor wie in einem Film. Als wäre man in Middle-earth und gleich begrüßt einen ein freundlicher Hobbit. Dieses Gefühl verstärkte sich, als ich mich auf den Weg nach Hobbtiton machte, dem Filmset von “The Lord of the Rings” und “The Hobbit”.

Ich begab mich also auf eine kleine Reise, an den Ort an dem Frodo und Bilbos Abenteuer seinen Anfang fanden. Die Wanderung began in einem liebevoll gestalteten Garten, vorbei an Riesenkürbissen schlenderte ich um einen keinen Teich und an Gemüsebeeten vorbei. Verzaubert von all den authentisch gestalteten Hobbit Höhlen, bewunderte ich all die blumigen Vorgärten mit Schaukelstühlen und all diese Liebe zum Detail. Ein Dorf voller Schönheit und Ausgeglichenheit, mit der markanten Kiefer die über allem thront. Ich verlor mich immer mehr und mehr hier in diesem Ort, bis ich zum absoluten Herzstück kam: Bag End. Ein Traum von einem Plätzchen, so unglaublich magisch. Und bevor ich mich wieder auf den Weg in die reale Welt begab, besuchte ich das Green Dragon Inn auf ein frisch gebrautes Bier.

Interessante Fakten:
Zum Abschluss möchte ich euch ein paar interessante Fakten nicht vorenthalten. Hobbiton befindet sich inmitten einer riesigen Scharfsfarm und wurde 1998 von den Locationscouts entdeckt. Neun Monate hat es gedauert, um das erste Hobbtion entstehen zu lassen. Heute gibt es 44 Hobbit Höhlen, die besucht werden können. Und diese haben alle unterschiedliche Größen. Es gibt kleine, um Beispielsweile Gandalf sehr groß wirken zu lassen, und größere, um Frodo und co optisch zu verkleinern. Und die große Kiefer über Bag End, ist tatsächlich kein lebendiger Baum. Er wurde monatelang errichtet un jedes Blatt einzeln angebracht. Als er dann endlich fertig war, schaute Sir Peter Jackson zu ihm hinauf und meinte: “I don’t like the colour of the leaves”. Und schon mussten tausende von Blättern neu bemalt werden. Respekt für so viel Liebe zum Detail!

EN // During my journey through New Zealand, it was hard to realise that all this was real sometimes. The nature in this country is magical and you get lost in its beauty. All the high mountains, crystal clear lakes and green hills and meadows, everything seems like a movie set. It’s like Middle-earth and you could think at the next corner a friendly hobbit will welcome you. This feeling got more intense as I made my way to Hobbtiton, the movie set of “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit”.

So I went on a little trip to visit the place where Frodo and Bilbo’s adventures began. The walk started in a lovely garden, I past giant pumpkins and strolled around a little lake past vegetable patch. Enchanted by all these authentic hobbit holes, I felt in love with the flowery front gardens with rocking chairs. A village full of beauty and piece, with the magnificent pine tree towering over everything. I lost myself more and more in this place, until I came to the heart piece: Bag End. A dream of a home, so incredibly magical. And before I went back to the real world, I visited the Green Dragon Inn for a fresh brewed beer.

Interesting facts:
Finally, I would like to share some interesting facts with you. Hobbiton is located in the middle of a huge sheep farm and was discovered in 1998 by the location scouts. It took nine months to create the first Hobbtion. Today there are 44 Hobbit holes that can be visited. And they all have different sizes. There are small ones to make Gandalf very tall, and larger ones to visually reduce the size of Frodo and co. And the big pine tree over Bag End is actually not a living tree. It was built for months and each leaf attached individually. When it was finally finished, Sir Peter Jackson looked up and said: ”I don’t like the color of the leaves.” So thousands of leaves had to be repainted. Respect for all this love for details!
